CBD Oil’s Health Benefits

CBD oil is an extract from Cannabis indica (or Cannabis sativa) plants, which are the same plants that make marijuana. Some believe that CBD oil can be used to reduce pain, anxiety, and stimulate appetite, in much the same way as marijuana, but without any psychoactive effects. CBD oil has also been shown to be effective in certain types of seizures.

CBD, the abbreviation for cannabidiol (the chemical that is shorthand for cannabis), is one of the chemicals with the greatest health benefits. Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, produces the “high” psychoactive effects. THC is not usually found in CBD oil, but it may be present in some products sold in certain states.

CBD oil is CBD oil that contains CBD mixed in an inert carrier oil such as hemp seed oil or coconut oil. The bottled oil, called a tincture, is sold in various concentrations. You can also find CBD capsules, CBD chewables and CBD sprays under the tongue.

Health Benefits

The exact mechanism of CBD’s action is not known. Unlike THC, CBD has a relatively low affinity for cannabinoid receptors in the brain. These molecules are where THC binds in order to produce its psychoactive effects.

CBD, however, is believed to have the ability to influence other receptors such as opioid receptors that regulate pain, glycine receptors that regulate the regulation of neurotransmitter serotonin and the “feel good” hormone.

CBD oil is claimed to be able to treat a variety of health issues, including:

  • Acne
  • Anorexia
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic pain
  • Depression
  • Withdrawal and drug addiction
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle spasms
  • Parkinson’s disease

CBD is gaining popularity and so does research. However, there are very few clinical studies that support CBD oil’s effects.
